The Directorate General for the Environment, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, has completed the first phase of work to consolidate the slopes of Mount of public utility The Navela and Solan, in the municipality of Blanca, with the aim to prevent the impact of landslides.
The execution of these works have had a budget of 211,000 euros.
The second phase is already in hiring process, for a total of 234,000 euros, and is expected to be executed before next November.
The location of the center town of White at the foot of that slope makes it vulnerable to falling rocks, which occurs periodically.
The hill called The Navel and The Solan, with highs in the vicinity of the village of 313 meters high, is characterized by the contrast between the soft side materials (marl and clay) and hard materials from the top (of conglomerates and calcarenitas Miocene).
This determines such issues risk being somewhat altered and highly fractured materials atop the hillside and present a steep slope, favored by low resistance to erosion of the materials that compose it.
The mountainous terrain has a length of 1,900 meters, being the risk area which adjoins the village (1,000 meters).
The western edge due to its proximity to the houses, is the area of greatest danger, so, in this first phase, carried out the construction of a dynamic barrier of plastic deformation, 350 meters long and four meters height, with capacity to absorb energy without destructive effects in all the component elements of the system.
The purpose of this barrier is protection against falling rocks from slopes or hillsides located on upper bound.
For the placement of these barriers they have been installed poles formed by metal profiles anchored to the ground by micropiles.
Previous performances
Evidence of repeated requests for correction of the slopes and ravines that affect the people of Blanca since 1928. In the first half of the forties have a pine reforestation project was developed which, while in other parts of the mountain had results satisfactory, did not happen on the slope, because the drag prevented trees take root.
In 1963 albarradas regeneration and low walls slope were built and conducted a revegetation based pitas and prickly pears that although the situation improved, not solved the problem of rock falls and crawls, affecting especially in times heavy storms.
